Wildscape & Xeriscape Gardening

Xeriscape and wildscape gardening are two similar ways to garden in an earth-friendly manner. Xeriscape is the concept of using plants that can grow in this area without requiring extra water. The one problem with this concept is that some plants adapt too well to our Texas climate, escape their planting (with the help of wind or birds) and out-compete the native plants in natural areas. Chinese Privet is a prime example of this, as is Kudzu further east, and Hydrilla in our waterways.

Wildscape takes the xeriscape concept one step further by using only native plants. By doing this, the concerns over exotic plants escaping and taking over an area are eliminated, and one is assured that the plant will survive the hot Texas summers and wide variations of temperature in the winter.
